You know, I read something earlier today that a pundit speculated that "socialist" is the new code word for "nigger" among the right wing. I think that in a real sense it is, but it's not as straight forward as that. Americans have always been racist, but Americans have always resisted been seen as racists (especially by themselves when they look in the mirror). "Socialist" is actually a step removed from "nigger"

First, the person using "socialist' lumps all people needing healthcare and not currently getting it into categories such as "not me", "poor", "black", "Hispanic", "lazy", "worthless", "undeserving" etc, getting to progressively more demeaning words as they work themselves up. Never, ever, ever in this internal process does the word "nigger" pop up audibly.

However, when it boils down to it, the objections (other than the very reasonable objections about process and affordability and which plan is best, etc) that come from this group boil down to "someone who is not me and is not *as good* (read "as human") as I am is getting health care out of this, and I think health care is a zero sum game. Therefore, if that person gets good health care, I will of necessity lose out" There are a lot of false premises in this thought process, but the one germane to the "socialism" = "nigger" idea is that those who will be getting health care if Congress can get HR 3200 through will be the "undeserving". Since (as many studies have shown) implicit racism still demonstrates that many, many white folks still consciously or unconsciously blame black folks for their own oppression and think that they are unworthy of better lives because they have "chosen" poverty and ghettoization, the key *unspoken* word in the interior dialogue is "nigger".

But those of us who point it out to them will of course be the ones accused of racism.

Given that it's desirable (and I think many on the left and right would agree that it is), how would we go about dismantling the concept of corporate person-hood, especially given that it has become a global phenomenon, and no longer merely a US or Western concept? How far would it need to go? How would we redefine a corporation? Let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater.
