On ‘Over the Rainbow’

I’ve always thought that Israel ‘Iz’ Kamakawiwo’ole’s version of Over the Rainbow is a response to the original version from the Wizard of Oz, saying, ‘Yes, it is beautiful and wonderful here. But ‘here’ is anywhere you are, any time you happen to be there. You’re already over the rainbow. All you have to do is open your eyes.

(and on that note, the use of ‘Over the Rainbow’ as a sort of theme song for the LGBTQ rights movement makes me giggle and chortle and chuckle and smile in all the right ways).
